#sleeponside – How To Sleep Safely During Pregnancy

 

92% of pregnant women have trouble sleeping. It can seem impossible to find a position that’s comfortable for you and safe and supportive for baby. But with the recent publishing of a significant new research study, it is vital to make sure expectant mums-to-be are aware of how to sleep safely, to reduce potential risks to their baby’s health.

The recent Midlands and North of England Stillbirth Study (MiNESS) is the largest study yet which looks into maternal sleep position and pregnancy – it is the fourth study to confirm the link between stillbirth and sleeping on your back (supine sleep).  Tommy’s, the largest charity funding research into the causes of miscarriage, stillbirth and premature birth, recently developed the #sleeponside campaign along with this short video to raise awareness about the risks of sleeping on your back in late pregnancy.


Sleeping on your back in the mid-to-late stages of pregnancy can result in the weight of your uterus pressing down on your vena cava, the major vein that returns blood from your lower body to your heart.  This can make you feel dizzy and nauseas, as well as interfering with the flow of blood, oxygen and nutrients to your developing baby.
