How to Sleep Safely During Pregnancy

#sleeponside – How To Sleep Safely During Pregnancy

92% of pregnant women have trouble sleeping. It can seem impossible to find a position that’s comfortable for you and safe and supportive for baby. But with the recent publishing of a significant new research study, it is vital to make sure expectant mums-to-be are aware of how to sleep safely, to reduce potential risks to their baby’s health.

Going to sleep on your side in late pregnancy has been shown to reduce the risk of stillbirth

The recent Midlands and North of England Stillbirth Study (MiNESS) is the largest study yet which looks into maternal sleep position and pregnancy – it is the fourth study to confirm the link between stillbirth and sleeping on your back (supine sleep).  Tommy’s, the largest charity funding research into the causes of miscarriage, stillbirth and premature birth, recently developed the #sleeponside campaign along with this short video to raise awareness about the risks of sleeping on your back in late pregnancy.

Sleeping on your back in the mid-to-late stages of pregnancy can result in the weight of your uterus pressing down on your vena cava, the major vein that returns blood from your lower body to your heart.  This can make you feel dizzy and nauseous, as well as interfering with the flow of blood, oxygen and nutrients to your developing baby.

Tips for Sleeping Comfortably On Your Side

A pregnancy belt, like the Dream Belt by Babymoov, can provide real comfort for you and protection for your baby by enabling mum-to-be to sleep comfortably on the side which otherwise wouldn’t normally be so easy during the later stages.  Co-created with mums and midwives who recognised a reoccurring problem for pregnant women, Dream Belt’s unique design uses soft memory foam sides to fill the gap between the hip and the mattress, relieving pressure and weight of the bump.

Dream Belt follows your every movement during the night and thanks to its soft, stretchy and mouldable mix of materials, the belt will adapt to your body shape and bump as you grow!

Pregnancy Sleep Safety with help of the Dream Belt

Made from bamboo material, which is naturally breathable and antibacterial, the next-generation Dream Belt FRESH keeps mum-to-be cool and comfortable during the warmer months. Blue-gel encapsulated memory foam not only supports mum and baby while sleeping on the side but also enables good ventilation and airflow around the bump, stopping mum from overheating. The co-ordinating Mum & b micro bead Maternity Pillow FRESH is also available, for the ultimate sleep support combo.

Putting an ergonomic pregnancy pillow behind your back or between your legs can also help, by offering stability and support on your side. The ergonomic peanut shape and soft micro-bead filling of the Mum & b Maternity Pillow mean it’s perfect for reducing pressure and providing support in a variety of positions. It even doubles up as a super soft nursing pillow for feeding baby too.
